Head of the Chinese
delegation to the 59th Session of the UN Commission on Human
Rights pointed out that the debate on the item concerning
country specific situations provided the best schoolroom for
those who unacquainted with the meaning of con founding
right and wrong, power politics and double
standards.
Sha Zukang, ambassador of
China's permanent delegation to the United Nations in
Geneva, exposed some Western countries' interference in
other countries' human rights at the debate on the item
concerning country specific situations during the 59th
Session of the UN Commission on Human Rights (CHR) held on
April 1.
The ambassador pointed out
that the item concerning country specific situations has
been listed on the agenda of CHR sessions for 36 years.
During this period, great changes have taken place in the
world. Regrettably, a cold war characterized by political
confrontation exists in all UN bodies, particularly in the
CHR.
"As early as in the
18th and 19th centuries, a number of Western countries
launched colonial wars of aggression that encroached upon
human rights on a massive scale. However, today those who
are being censured are almost all former colonies of theirs
and developing countries. The debate on the item concerning
country specific situations has provided the best schoolroom
for those unacquainted with the meaning of confounding right
and wrong, power policies and double standards," said
Sha.
The ambassador noted that
the 59th CHR Session turned a blind eye to the humanitarian
disasters and the blood-shed and deaths of thousands of
women, children and the elderly taking place in a certain
country. Some countries, in all hypocrisy, voiced their
concern about the human rights in some other countries and
left no stone unturned to make things difficult for
developing countries struggling with the process of
globalization. "This is the highest pitch of
irony," said Sha. On China's human
rights situation, the ambassador said today's China is the
world's largest developing nation where the people are its
masters. The current human rights situation in China is at
its best in the country's history, for which certain Western
countries, or rather certain people, are feeling
uncomfortable. So they have become bent on besmirching China
and made it a target of attacks and allegations.
"I'd like to tell them that the
Chinese Government exercises the utmost concern for the
human rights of the 1.3 billion Chinese people. It is
unimportant or even insignificant whether you are aware of
or accept this. Nobody in the world can block the Chinese
people's advance with giant strides along the road chosen by
themselves," stressed Sha.
The ambassador concluded, "We are against
political confrontation. This is not because we are afraid
of it, but because political confrontation cannot produce a
peaceful culture. We oppose the item concerning country
specific situations. This is not because we are afraid of
it, but because the item does not work in favor of
protecting and promoting human rights. It is highly
commendable that various countries should conduct
self-examination and genuine reform in respect to the item
concerning country specific situations through dialog and cooperation."
